Childhood trauma can become even more difficult to process when one painful experience is immediately followed by another—and Donnie McClurkin says some of the most traumatic moments of his life happened when he was only 8 years old.
After Donnie’s 2-year-old brother was tragically struck and k*lled by a truck, his parents were overwhelmed with grief. Donnie says he and his siblings were sent to stay with their uncle while his parents stayed with their grandmother.
But Donnie says the relative who was supposed to protect him crossed an inappropriate boundary with him on the very night of his little brother’s funeral.
From a child-psychology standpoint, experiencing multiple traumatic events so close together can create compounded trauma—especially when a child is already grieving and then loses their sense of safety with a trusted adult.
At only 8, Donnie was grieving his little brother, carrying guilt surrounding his death and dealing with another traumatic experience he says he kept inside for years.
